where now for this whole DJing thing?

July 31st, 2007 by robbie

DVD compatible turntables like Pioneer's DVJ-X1 are driving the age of video turntablism As you may have noticed from the main BeatsBase blog on the home page, I recently added ‘turntablism’ to the BeatsBase genre list.  Forgetting for a moment that it should have been there already, it got me to thinking about the evolution of DJing.

I recently read an article which spoke of three main stages in the development of DJing begnining with its conception/invention, evolving through turntablism and now into visual turntablism.  I certainly can’t argue with the first two, but I must admit the relatively recent development of video turntablism doesn’t sit well with me.  Perhaps I need to embrace it a little more but I can’t help but feel it relies more upon technology than it does on skill.

Will it ultimately complement the art form, or simply cheapen it with ’smoke and mirrors’?  Perhaps it’s too early to say, but for now I’m happy to just listen to music.

its good to moan!

I’d just like to say thanks to all of you out there who have given me positive feedback on BeatsBase, not only is it great motivation for me to press on and try to improve the site but well.. its just nice!

That being said as strange as it may sound, I’m actually equally interested in your bad experiences of BeatsBase.  I really want to hear about the things that annoy you, the features you wish were included, and even any general dislikes you may have with the site.  It seems like I’ve been saying this in every post but it really is important to me that BeatsBase evolves to suit your needs.  Unfortunately that involves me taking the odd piece of criticism on the chin and doing something about it!

So feel free to ‘have at’, but lets avoid any personal jibes folks, yeah? I do have feelings you know.

attention seeking!

The internet’s a big place with lots of sites demanding your attention.  Cutting through the… ahem… ‘weaker’ offerings for DJs is frustrating and is a significant hurdle for any new DJ site.  BeatsBase is no different.  I’d would therefore like to thank all you ‘early adopters’ of BeatsBase for helping to spread the word and promote the site.

It is my ultimate goal to build a community site for real DJs who appreciate what DJing and music is all about, and due largely to your help, thats starting to happen!

the work starts here!

So BeatsBase being live is now old news and you may be forgiven for thinking I’m just going to sit back and admire how pretty it all is, after all BeatsBase is my baby!  However, that’s where the problem lies, babies need lots of care and attention.

My philosophy for the site is that it becomes a growing, thriving community of like minded DJs and for that to happen we need to respond to the needs and wants of you our users.  With that said feel free to Contact us about, well.. anything and we’ll do our best to sort you out.

just like that, we’re live!

And just that like that, BeatsBase has gone live.  Having tweaked and tested the site for a number of weeks we reached a point where we needed to bite the bullet and open the doors.  Hopefully you see something here that interests you enough to become part of our growing DJ community.  All we ask is you bear with us through any teething problems BeatsBase may have (lets hope there’s none).

Please take a look around the site and enjoy!

Hey there I'm Robbie, the man behind BeatsBase. I'm pretty new to DJing (I only got my first set of decks two years ago) but I've been a long time admirer of the profession and have always loved to perform and listen to music. Having benefited from sound advice and tips from more experienced DJs myself I set about developing BeatsBase, a place for DJs to meet, interact and inspire. Enjoy!
